What are the best or your favourite programs that are available for free? Don't Know? Looking for some? Look here. Feel free to add to them!
Mozilla Firefox - Probably the best web browser around. Fully customisable and far fewer flaws than certain other browsers *cough*internetexplorer*cough*. If you don't like it.....
Try Opera - For me, not as good as Firefox, but does allow it to be identified as another type of browser - useful for sites that don't work in other browsers. Free version has a small ad banner, but nothing that ruins the experience
Mozilla Thunderbird - The email client from Mozilla. Fully customisable as with Firefox, but just not as exciting.
Open Office - To paraphrase the Kia ads: Would you spend £100 on a closed source memory hogging office suite, or would you rather spend naff all on a brilliant open source office suite? Thought so.
Avast AntiVirus - If you don't have a decent AntiVirus program, this can become it.
ZoneAlarm Firewall - One of the best free firewalls out there. Kerio Personal Firewall is also good, but I don't have the link.
Spybot - No excuse for not having this. Best spyware protection, full stop .
Audacity - Absolutely brilliant mp3 editor. Can probably do many professional things, but I just use it to split up, reverse, speed up and take out parts of files. Uses mp3 and Wav.
WinAmp - Great Music Player. Completely skinnable, loads of plugins available. All the paid-for version does is rip and burn CDs into/from mp3.
ImToo - CD ripper and audio file encoder. Ideally needs the LAME mp3 encoder you get with Audacity, but will convert m4a to mp3. Yay!
