Several (at least 4) explosions have ripped through the London underground system, and one double-decker bus.
Reports on the number of confirmed deaths vary, but there have been at least 33, with 150 injured. The centre of London has come to a halt and the emergency services are dealing with the aftermath.
Tony Blair called the acts 'barbaric' and, flanked by the other G8 leaders in Gleneagles, condemned the attack. The Home Secretary Charles Clarke has made a statement to the House of Commons, his main message being that it is important for the country to pull together, but also that the public should not make unnecessary journeys (and should certainly not attempt to travel into central London).
The Prime Minister, although determined that the attack should not disrupt the G8 talks on Africa and the environment, is returning to London for the day (intending to chair a COBRA meeting).
A group calling themselves the 'Secret Organisation of Al-Qaeda in Europe' have claimed the attack, but it is important to stress that this has in no way been confirmed.
That's in case you hadn't heard about that...
Nasty.

Also reports coming in of a bomb scare on a bus in Edinburgh. Police have reportedly carried out two controlled explosions. If this is confirmed, I would say it's most likely to be related to the anarchist and anti-capitalist protests, and someone with a sh1t sense of timing
CONFIRMED - The bomb attacks on the tube were not set off at different times. It has now emerged that they exploded within 50 seconds of each other
UNCONFIRMED - 2 men were shot outside Canary Wharf on Thursday morning. They were supposedly suicide bombers, although this has been dismissed as just a rumour by many
NOTICE - There is to be a two minute silence at 1200BST next Thursday in remembrance
(there are currently 49 confirmed deaths, 25 missing)
